Our History

Eagles Mere Historic Village, Inc. (EMHVI) is a private nonprofit organization founded in 2003 to purchase, restore and maintain historic commercial properties in the center of the famous mountain town in Northcentral Pennsylvania which is on the National Register of Historic Sites… Two state agencies – Pennsylvania Preservation and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission -presented their 2007 annual award to the organization for community involvement in the restoration.

EMHVI currently owns and manages three major properties. The largest is the General Store, which houses the outstanding Eagles Mere Historic Museum and several retail spaces including antique shops, an art gallery, and a large gift shop featuring clothing, jewelry and a variety of art and craft objects. A small annex building also has antiques.  Merchants interested in renting a retail space can contact us at (web site).

A second major property is the Sweet Shop that for more than a century has offered light meals, ice cream treats and candies.

A third building is home to Robin Real Estate offering sales and rental properties in Eagles Mere and surrounding counties.

In addition to these historic buildings, EMHVI now sponsors and manages three annual  summer events that have been held on the large tree-shaded village green adjacent to its buildings for more than 40 years: antique shows in July and early September and an arts and crafts show in August..

The founding of EMHVI was stimulated by the Eagles Mere Borough Council and Mayor who shared concerns for the future of the commercial properties and also for the borough museum which was then housed in a former church that lacked adequate space and climate controls. Private citizens were appointed to a commission to provide advice in response to these concerns and ultimately to assume the role of board of directors for the new organization to raise the more than $3 million required to purchase and restore the buildings for museum and retail use.  A short history of the effort is on this web site.

As a 501(c)3 organization EMHVI can accept tax deductible contributions for its continued maintenance of the historic buildings.

The Last Unspoiled Resort

A National Historic Site featured as a unique historic town and vacation spot in numerous travel writer articles, Eagles Mere (elevation 2,126 feet) in the “Endless Mountains” of Northcentral Pennsylvania, was developed in the 1800′s as a resort for families seeking to escape the hustle, bustle and climate of industrialized city life..

They came to the mountain for the cool clean air and crystal clear waters of the mile long lake. They built turn-of- the- century Victorian “cottages”. The cottagers loved then and continue to love the unspoiled beauty and serenity of this peaceful oasis so much that they have placed much of the land into the protective stewardship of a Lake Association and a nature Conservancy.

The town has specialty shops, a remarkable bookstore, an old fashioned Sweet Shop, an outstanding museum,  a private golf club, quintessential country inns and cottage rentals. Eagles Mere remains much the same as it did years ago as its pace of life counters the fast and stressful tensions of modern life. Eagles Mere- “the last unspoiled resort”, now waits for you!

Norman Simpson, author of “Back Roads and Country Inns”, while recommending the Eagles Mere Inn said “For me, Eagles Mere is one of the last unspoiled vacation spots in the East.” The Philadelphia Inquirer called Eagles Mere A Nature Photographer’s Dream.”

Eagles Mere Toboggan Slide

Capt. E.S. Chase stood at the edge of the lake one January day watching his grandchildren. They asked him why he couldn’t build a “real good” toboggan slide down the slope of Lake Avenue. It was a logical idea. Capt. Chase had a “finger in every pie” in the development of Eagles Mere. He had moved here from Williamsport in 1886 and continually initiated projects such as laying out the street plans of the village, planning and cutting the Arrow Paths and our well known Laurel Path around the lake. One of his monumental contributions was sounding out and making a map of the Eagles Mere Lake depths theretofore unknown.

He began work on a design and method for building a toboggan slide that would be safe, sturdy and continued pleasure for Eagles Mere residents.

The slide today is executed from these original plans using Capt. Chase’s planner and his method of grooving the ice.

  • The Eagles Mere Toboggan Slide is located on Route #42 at the top of the hill in the historic village of Eagles Mere
  • To find out if the slide is in operation, please call the slide information hotline 570-525-3244
